IDLES “Heel/Heal”

About: A personal project, this video for Heel/Heal, from IDLES’ debut album Brutalism, was later featured in an official livestream for the album’s 5th anniversary.

Role: Concept, Editor, Animation

Type: Personal Project

Overview: Heel/Heal began as an editing experiment. It intercuts scenes from Vanishing Point (Sarafian, 1971) and Death Proof (Tarantino, 2007) – the latter of which references the former – to create a single high-octane chase, with the films’ protagonists appearing to collide across 36 years of cinema. Placed against the biting irony of IDLES’ lyrics, the sequence then became a subversive counterpoint: while the vocals chant about moving to the suburbs and hoarding possessions, the visuals show cars tearing out of the city and into the desert, pursued until both meet their end, suggesting freedom from consumerism is a doomed endeavour.
