Countering Disinformation
About: Produced in collaboration with UK academics, this explainer was part of the research project: ‘Countering Disinformation: Enhancing Journalistic Legitimacy in Public Service Media’.
The project was led by Cardiff University and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. You can learn more about it here.
Role: Script, Designer, Animator
Overview: While the wider project explored a number of angles, this video focused on the resulting article ‘Does the Political Context Shape How “Due Impartiality” is Interpreted?: An Analysis of BBC Reporting of the 2019 UK and 2020 US Election Campaigns’.
Each sequence was designed to take an abstract idea and deliver it in an instantly graspable way. Since the study was, at its core, about information, we anchored the piece in the metaphor of binaries, which then became the building blocks for a series of transformations.
Once the research team approved the approach, I developed storyboards and an animatic to test pacing and flow, then moved to Blender for the final animation. A scratch voiceover was used to guided timing, with a professional recording replacing it in post. The final stage brought together voice, music, and sound design, ensuring the visuals didn’t just illustrate the findings but carried their weight in an impactful way.
